In 2006, we first heard about Advanced Vibration Technology (AVT) training in Los Angeles. It was and still is the workout that celebrities and supermodels swear by for fast muscle toning, most owning their own vibration plate for home use. Initially, the attraction was the super fast muscle toning gained after 30 minute training sessions, 3 x per week. This seemed too good to be true for the traditional, functional training Personal Trainer, many dismissing it as a gimmick. We went on our own search for the science behind this new technology. Power Plate studios were already extremely popular in Europe. After extensive research, we concluded that this would be a highly beneficial addition to the programs we offer at our studio.
We now have five years of experience ‘under our belts’ using AVT on clients and training instructors. We have mastered the techniques to get fantastic body shape change, muscle strength, increased flexibility and injury prevention using vibration training.
Believing in AVT as an excellent addition to a fitness training program, we have recently upgraded to the latest machines, the POWER PLATE PRO 6 with cables. This is quite an investment! We have four POWER PLATE PRO 6’s at close to $20,000 each! The vectron retractable cables have been a big hit with our clients. The cables offer low to high resistance using the ProMotion system. The effective transfer of vibration to the upper body also allow for a new repertoire of exercises that target the upper body and posture muscles both static and dynamic on and off the plate.

Phew! What a list. But guess what? We can endorse these claims with the results achieved with our clients.
For those of you who have never seen or stepped foot on a vibration plate – the ones on sale in the shopping malls don’t count. We call those the ‘washing machines’, ‘hula dancer’ or ‘wobble machine’. They usually retail for around $500, a cheap copy and give AVT a bad name.
Here is the basic science and history behind the Power Plate. Advanced Vibration Technology exploits the body’s innate reflexive response to disruptions in stability in order to stimulate enhanced muscle strength and performance. The Power Plate produces a vibration through which energy is transferred to the body. This mechanical stimulus produces a stretch reflex which, depending on the frequency, results in rapid and intense muscle contractions 30 – 50 times per second.
Just as the leg kicks forward involuntarily when the doctor strikes the lower knee to test reflexes, the body’s muscles engage in an involuntary reflexive contraction in response to vibration’s disruption in stability. The body’s reaction to this mechanical stimulus is all natural and occurs involuntarily at the neural level.
Exercise causes the body to tire, rest allows the body to recover. By repeating this process, the body adjusts to the level of effort, resulting in an increase in physical performance. This phenomenon, called super-compensation, similarly occurs when training on the Power Plate. However, compared to traditional training methods, greater results are achieved and hormonal production is increased in much less time.
The Power Plate was invented by Guss van der Meer, a member of the Olympic coaching team in the Netherlands and noted innovator in the field of exercise and athletic training. Seeking ways to improve conditioning and performance of elite athletes, van der Meer uncovered research on whole body vibration exercises that had been performed by scientists in Russia and Eastern Europe.
Intrigued, he investigated whole body vibratory-training equipment and evaluated it’s suitability for athletes under his supervision. Dissatisfied with the quality of available vibration devices, van der Meer assembled a team of designers, engineers and manufacturers to develop a superior machine. Finding that only precisely calibrated frequencies and amplitudes could unleash the potential of their unit, and engage the body correctly, he created Advanced Vibration Technology, which is a form of scientifically calibrated Whole Body Vibration. These calibrations consist of a series of scientifically measured frequency levels that produce quantitative results.
Although originally developed to train elite athletes, it was soon discovered that Power Plate’s Advanced Vibration Technology, and Advanced Body Vibration as it is also known, has nearly unlimited benefits for physical therapy, longevity and anti-aging, sports rehabilitation, beauty and wellness, alternative medicine, fighting osteoporosis and far more.
Power Plate is consistently proving through on-going scientific research that it is a remarkable machine with limitless applications. Studies are done year-round on the Power Plate, as new benefits and key applications are validated all the time.
Before you rush off to your closest vibration training studio there are a few conditions that would prevent you from using one. The list of contraindications is not absolute and you would be strongly advised to consult with your G.P. if you have any doubts. The conditions are - Pregnancy, Acute Thrombosis, Serious cardiovascular disease, Pacemaker, Recent wounds from operation or surgery, Hip and knee implants, Acute hernia, discopathy, spondylolysis, severe diabetes, Epilepsy, recent infections, severe migraines, tumours, recently placed IUD’s, metal pins or plates.
Research is still being conducted on the effects of vibration on certain medical conditions. This list may soon be reduced. Practical experience indicates that there are a number of cases where it is beneficial to integrate vibration training into a treatment program. This should always be done under the supervision of a doctor, physician or trained professional.
What do you do on the Plate? The 30 minute session is broken down into 60 second intervals with a total of 30 exercises. A circuit training style sequence of squats, push-ups, tricep dips, abs, planks etc is performed. The frequency is set between 30 – 40 hz. The vibration loads the muscle causing fatigue even at 30 seconds. This is quite unbelievable to the guys who ‘overload’ the fastest due to their muscle mass. The best results are achieved by using the Power Plate 2 – 3 times a week.
For the Personal Trainer there are limitless variations using the Power Plate when training a client. The plate can be used in conjunction with weights, stability balls, roller platforms, medicine balls, kettle bells, plyometrics.
Recently we have trained two completely different athletes. The first, one of the Sydney Swan players for muscle recovery - Studies have proven Power Plate’s ability to reduce muscle pain and soreness and expedite the recovery of damaged muscles and tendons. The second is a ballet dancer, who required increased flexibility and explosive plyometric training. Both achieved great results and benefited from training on the Plate.
We can now add our own personal findings to the research on vibration training. The combination of 30 minute intense Interval Training Sessions on the Treadmill and Bike before or after the Power Plate session have resulted in the most extreme weight loss, body fat loss, muscle tone. On the last 10 week course, the clients who set weight loss goals were all successful with some losing up to 6 kilos over the term.
